Emergence 1 and 2

Originally performed Saturday, October 9th
on location at Harriet Beecher Stowe Center (HBSC)
commissioned by HBSC
co-produced as a collaboration between HBSC and JDPP

Emergence 1 and 2 are inspired by the moving installation at HBSC of the Solitary Garden by artist jackie sumell and the creative work generated in JDPP’s residencies with women at York CI and men at Willard Cybulski CI along with those who have returned to our communities and continue to pursue their arts interests with JDPP.

Performed by members of the JDPP Ensemble and guest artists who have returned to the community.

In 2020-21, jackie sumell and Judy Dworin developed original works of art as a means of using creative expression to explore historical themes and social justice issues today. Both sumell’s Solitary Garden installation, added to the HBSC grounds as part of 2020 Stowe Prize programming for Albert Woodfox’s memoir, Solitary, and Dworin’s collaborative dance, song, and spoken word performances, Emergence 1 & 2, address issues relating to incarceration and bridge community-based action with the artists’ creative impulse and practice.

Both pieces invite us to consider a vision of justice based on our common humanity.
